Examinations Programs -
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Civilian examinees should visit The College Board: http://clep.collegeboard.org/
CLEP consists of a series of examinations that test an individual’s college level knowledge gained through course work, independent study, cultural pursuits, travel, special interests, military service schools, and professional development. The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends the minimum score for awarding credit but each institution determines its acceptable score and the amount of credit granted for each examination. CLEP General and Subject examinations are accepted for credit by more than 2,900 colleges and universities.
Prior to testing, the examinee needs to know the institution's acceptance policy and passing score requirements.
Beginning in July 2001, the College Board introduced a computer-based version of the CLEP tests at national test centers (colleges and universities). There are over 1700 colleges and universities that administer the CLEP eCBT tests.
Effective Feb. 16, 2004, DANTES authorized up-front funding of the CLEP eCBT test fee for eligible military and civilian examinees at national test centers. The current fee is $80 per test. DANTES does not fund the advance, non-refundable registration fee charged by national test centers to reserve a date and time for testing. This fee ranges from $15 to $25 per test and the examinee is responsible for paying this fee. Effective Dec. 11, 2011, DANTES no longer funds retesting on a previously funded CLEP exam of the same title.
Advantages of testing at a national test center:
All test titles are available. For a listing of all the test titles visit http://clep.collegeboard.org/.
Instant scoring for all but the "CLEP College Composition" test.
National Test Center Options
National Test Center – On-Campus Testing
For the nearest “Open” national test center, visit http://clep.collegeboard.org/. An “Open” center agrees to test any examinee who pays the non-refundable advance registration fee. Those centers designated by an American flag are Military Friendly test centers and actively promote testing services to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Military CAC identification is required for DANTES-funded testing.
National Test Center - Base-Sponsored Testing
A growing number of military installations are entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with national test centers to provide CLEP eCBT testing through their base-sponsored education centers. Currently this option is available at more than one hundred installations worldwide. Testing is free to eligible military and for a select group of civilian personnel. DANTES funds the test fee and through our contract with the College Board pays for the administration of the test by the national test center. Check with your education center to see if this option is available. Beginning Oct. 1, 2013, College Board will begin offering internet-based testing at base-sponsored and military friendly national test centers.
DANTES Test Centers - Paper-based CLEP Testing
Effective Dec. 31, 2011, all CLEP paper-based testing for CONUS has been terminated and effective Sept. 30, 2012, all CLEP paper-based testing for OCONUS has been terminated.
Military examinees should check with their education center for free CLEP sample tests and other test preparation options.
