COLLEGE LEVEL EXAMINATION PROGRAM (CLEP)

CLEP consists of a series of examinations that test an individual’s college level knowledge gained through course work, independent study, cultural pursuits, travel, special interests, military service schools, and professional development. The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends the minimum score for awarding credit but each institution determines its acceptable score and the amount of credit granted for each examination. CLEP General and Subject examinations are accepted for credit by more than 2,900 colleges and universities.

PRIOR TO TESTING, THE EXAMINEE NEEDS TO KNOW THE INSTITUTION’S ACCEPTANCE POLICY AND PASSING SCORE REQUIREMENTS.

Beginning in July 2001, the College Board introduced a computer-based version of the CLEP tests at national test centers (colleges and universities). There are over 1300 colleges and universities that administer the CLEP eCBT tests.

Effective 16 February 2004, DANTES authorized up-front funding of the CLEP eCBT test fee for eligible military and civilian examinees at national test centers. The current fee is $70 per test. DANTES does not fund the advance, non-refundable registration fee charged by national test centers to reserve a date and time for testing. This fee ranges from $15 to $25 per test and the examinee is responsible for paying this fee.

Advantages of testing at a national test center:

*All 34 test titles are available. For a listing of all the test titles visit http://www.collegeboard.com/clep/

*Year-round testing on the “English Composition with Essay” test

*Instant scoring for all but the “English Composition with Essay” test

NATIONAL TEST CENTER OPTIONS

National Test Center – On-Campus Testing

For the nearest “Open” national test center, visit http://www.collegeboard.com/clep/. An “Open” center agrees to test any examinee who pays the non-refundable advance registration fee. Those centers designated by an American flag are Military Friendly test centers and actively promote testing services to members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Military identification is required for DANTES-funded testing.

National Test Center - Base-Sponsored Testing

A growing number of military installations are contracting with national test centers to provide CLEP eCBT testing through their on-base education centers. Currently this option is available at more than one hundred installations worldwide. Testing is free to eligible military and for a select group of civilian personnel. DANTES funds both the test fee and through our contract with the College Board pays for the administration of the test by the national test center. Check with your education center to see if this option is available.

DANTES TEST CENTERS – PAPER-BASED CLEP eCBT TESTING

In April 2004, The College Board introduced 14 high-volume CLEP eCBT paper-based tests at DANTES Test Centers. These test are developed from the computer-based CLEP tests available at national test centers. Testing is free for eligible military personnel and for some civilians. The unfunded (examinee pays) civilian test fee is $120. The 14 CLEP General and Subject Test titles are:
