Varying definitions exist for alternative certification programs. We in Troops to Teachers prefer certification preparation structures that put retirees and veterans in the classroom in the shortest time for the least cost.

Many states offer quick, yet very effective certification programs, while others mandate an array of “fifth-year” certification course or even full-blown graduate programs. Prospective teachers should evaluate various states’ alternative approaches when selecting a second-career location.

Items To Consider When Selecting A Program

Certification issues:
a. Subject and level (high school, middle school, elementary), including vo-tech options. Greatest need is for Math, Science, and Special Ed teachers.
b. Which universities in the state have approved teacher preparation programs, especially “alternative certification programs?”
c. Possibility of an emergency or temporary certificate while completing courses for a permanent certification?
d. Program length, including number, length, and location of classes? How are “labs” handled? (A critical question for distance learning certification programs.)
e. Type of college transcripts required for state evaluation of your educational background?
f. Cost and time required evaluation completion?
g. Identify your course needs early so you may take some of the courses before you retire.
h. Required certification exams. Different levels of licensure granted?

Personal/Finance Issues:
a. Finances: In-state tuition rates? Special tuition for returning military residents? Jobs for spouses? Housing costs? Costs of state income tax, property taxes, sales taxes, etc. Teachers’ pay scale when hired. Typical vacancies.
b. Any medical support requirements? Are there military/VA hospitals within easy driving distance?
